Kasunic Announces Release of $1.5 Million in State Funds for Allegany College
Somerset, Sept. 7, 2011— State Sen. Richard A. Kasunic today announced the release of $1.5 million in state redevelopment grant funds for the Somerset campus of the Allegany College of Maryland.
“I am pleased to have played a role in releasing these dollars,” Kasunic said. “I commend the Corbett Administration for quickly recognizing the value and importance of this funding for our Somerset campus and will continue to seek state support for higher education.”
Kasunic said the college is planning to build a new work force development center at its Somerset campus. He said the new building is to offer teaching space and classrooms for training in heavy equipment on the first floor and training in the culinary arts on the second.
“Somerset county residents have benefitted from Allegany College and its outstanding educational resources for two decades,’ Kasunic added. “It is an important opportunity for many people and serves to elevate our region’s economy and workforce quality.”
The funds were approved during 2010 under former Gov. Ed Rendell. However, the release of the dollars was held up pending the Corbett Administration’s review of grant awards. The Governor’s Budget Office administers the redevelopment capital assistance program grant.
